nARCHITECTS won an Arts Masterplan competition held by the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus (BNMC) in 2006 by proposing a new 3000’ long linear park that connects the BNMC’s various hospitals and research institutions into a vibrant urban campus. The new park along Ellicott Street – named Ellicott Park in nARCHITECTS’ competition entry – introduces much needed outdoor public spaces to Buffalo Niagara’s 100 acre Medical Campus, and benefits not only the BNMC community, but also adjacent communities of Allentown and Fruit Belt.
In order to achieve this large scale new public amenity, Ellicott Park required combining the 16’ of ROW sidewalks on the East side with a 20’ setback (a setback recommended in a 2003 masterplan by Chan Krieger) to result in a 36’ wide linear park (plus a wider area at “National Grid Park”) spanning 6 blocks, from Goodell Street to North Street.
After winning the competition, and once the BNMC secured funding from the FTA (for privately owned land) and FHWA (for the ROW), nARCHITECTS reached out to collaborators SCAPE Landscape Architects, and Tillett Lighting Design, and worked with local A&E firm Foit Albert & Associates, which held the Prime contract with the City of Buffalo.
The 36′ wide streetscape is designed to feel park-like, with a variety of forking paths, islands and plazas. A “crosswalk landscape” is produced with alternating bands of light and dark concrete hardscape, diminishing and increasing in width according to anticipated pedestrian speed. Custom nARCHITECTS-designed “Inward” and “Outward” benches, a diverse planting scheme by SCAPE, and lighting developed by Tillett Lighting Design create a unique linear streetscape at the heart of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
